There is only one subject with which we can begin our pages this month: it is that which has been in the mouth of every one for the last few weeks, it is the loss which we are beginning to feel, now that the Vicar has gone away from us. That it is a deep sorrow to all it is so very true and so very easy to say, but we should rather try and express our great thankfulness that the complete rest and quiet, which is what the Vicar so really needs, have been given to him; and therefore let us add our prayers, every day of his absence from us, that he may be restored to us strong and well again.

A Letter from the Vicar

The Vicarage

April 2nd  1889

My dear people,

The work of  the last fortnight has been very heavy, and has prevented me from seeing you individually as I wished, I must therefore say “good-bye” to as many of you as possible, through our Parish Magazine.  It is a great sorrow to us to be away form you for so long a time, and especially at this season of the christian year;  but our heavenly Father  knows what is best for us all.  I thank you, more that words can express, for all the kindness of the last three months.  God bless you for it.

I know you will pray for us, as we shall daily for you.

Believe me,

Yours affectionate and grateful Vicar

EDWIN F. DYKE

Confirmation

His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury held a Confirmation for adults (over 21years of age) in All Saints Church, on Friday, March 29th, at 7.30pm.  His Grace attended a crowded meeting of the S.P.G., in the afternoon at the Town Hall, and came to the church from the vicarage;  he was met at the west door of the church by the clergy and the choir, and the hymn “Onward, Christian Soldiers” was sung as the processional.

The lessons was read from the pulpit by the Rev. H Baynes, the Archbishop’s Chaplain, and the preface by the Vicar of Maidstone.  His Grace then addressed the Candidates, before the solemn question was put, after which the “Veni Creator Spiritus” was sung. The candidates, who numbered 84, were led up to the Archbishop to be confirmed, nine moving from their  seats at a time, hymn 270 being sung as the candidates moved to and fro from their seats.  After the Confirmation hymn 280 was sung, and a  final address was given by the Archbishop, after which the closing prayers were said, and the service ended with the Recessional hymn 271, “O Jesus I have promised.”

NOTICE. The Confirmation announced for June 27th has been postponed till Wednesday July 24th

Concert

An evening concert was given in All Saints Boy’s School, on Monday, March 4th, the proceeds of which were devoted to the Organ and Choir Fund.  There was not a very large attendance, owing to the great attraction at the Corn Exchange on the following night, but the programme was a thoroughly good once, and went very well;  the sum of £7 was taken.  In giving the programme below, we should like to add that Mrs Ground was prevented form giving her valuable assistance owing to a severe cold.

Organ Recitals

A Recital was given by Mr Bath, in All Saints, Church on Monday, March 4th at 3.30.  There was a large number of people present, and the programme, which was well varied, was brilliantly executed.

The Offerings amounted to £3 17s. 6d., and were devoted to the Organ and Choir fund.

Mr Bath is now preparing a course of Organ Recitals to be given in Mary, by the eminent Organists, which we believe will be very much appreciated by all Maidstone people.

The following three have already been arranged:

May 1st or 2nd, N. de M. Sergison, Esq., Organist of St Peter’s Easton Square.

May 7th, J. T.  Bridge, Esq., Mus. Doc., Organist of Westminster Abbey.

May 15th, J. Higgs, Esq., Mus. Bac . Oxon, Organist of St Andrew’s Holborn.

It is necessary that a small fund should be provided of 8 guineas, as of course the gentlemen who are coming, and especially Dr. Bridge,  have necessarily to give up many engagements in London in order to come down here.  But we believe that was are right in saying that such an opportunity is not accorded often, of hearing the best music in so pleasant a way.  We therefore appeal with confidence to any of our readers, who are willing to encourage this  effort, to assist the guarantee fund by giving sums of five shillings, in  order to save us from any loss.  Any surplus, and we hope there will be a large one, will be devoted to the Organ and Choir fund.

Donations will be gladly received by S. Bath Esq., or the Rev. S. Cartwright, 46 Melville Road.

We are requested to announce that the first of the Lenten Lectures preached by the Rev. C. J. Ridgeway, at All Saints, on Tuesday March 12trh entitled “What think ye of Christ?” has been published, and may be purchased at Mr Burgiss-Brown’s for the sum of 3d.

The very large congregations which have filled the church on the Tuesdays in Lent attest  to the success of the Lectures, and the eloquent words and convincing arguments of the preacher cannot fail to bring home to many hearts the truth of the Christian faith with a strengthened belief in its importance.

Ad Gloriam Dei

In answer to the appeals which appeared in the last month’s Magazine, we beg to acknowledge with many thanks a donation of £5 form Mr. G. H. Larkin, and of £3 from another friend.  We still require £5 to carry out our scheme.  Who will help us?

Our thanks are due also to a member of the congregation for re-arranging the choir music, and making cases for holding and preserving same.

We are pleased to say that sufficient money  has been subscribed for the re-casting of the Church bell, and that the bell has been removed  and the work commenced.
